Henry Hill Hickman (1800-1830) formule le principe de l’anesthésie par inhalation. Il propose le gaz carbonique pour réaliser une anesthésie chirurgicale mais il n’arrive pas à susciter d’intérét pour cette technique tant en Angleterre qu’en France. Déprimé par son insuccès il se suicide à l’âge de 30 ans.
