John Eric Erichsen (1818-1896) publie ses essais (animaux) sur la ventilation des asphyxiés. Il utilise un appareil composé d’un réservoir de mélange air/oxygène et d’une pompe graduée de 300 ml . Il détermine que l’on peut insuffler 15 inch cube (250 ml) de mélange d’oxygène dix fois par minute - en prenant bien soin d’exprimer la cage thoracique car il craint le barotraumatisme (cf. Leroy d’Etiolles 1829).
